Is Wormagotchi a full biological C. elegans simulator?
Wormagotchi is not a full biological C. elegans simulator. It is a connectome-informed virtual pet game.
In practical terms, the game uses connectome-derived profile information to tune gameplay behavior, such as stress sensitivity, recovery pace, and energy pressure. It does not model every neuron, ion channel, synapse dynamic, or body-environment physics in full biological detail.
What does connectome-informed mean here?
- Real connectome sources are used when provider mode is set to cect.
- Those data inform parameter tuning so runs feel structured, not purely random.
- When real profile loading is unavailable, fallback defaults keep the game playable.
Current Limitations
- No neuron-by-neuron spiking activity for all 302 C. elegans neurons.
- No full synapse-level calibration for every chemical synapse and gap junction.
- No full biomechanical body simulation coupled to neural output.
- No complete sensory pipeline that maps real-world stimuli to neural inputs.
- The game is optimized for accessible play, not laboratory-grade biological fidelity.
Could Wormagotchi evolve toward neuron-by-neuron spiking simulation?
Yes, in principle. A realistic path is an incremental hybrid approach:
- Phase 1: keep gameplay layer, add a reduced spiking subnetwork for selected circuits.
- Phase 2: expand to more neurons with validated synaptic parameters and timing constraints.
- Phase 3: couple neural output to a simplified body/environment loop and compare behavior targets.
- Phase 4: optimize runtime so scientific depth and smooth play can coexist.
The main challenge is not only compute cost. It is obtaining and validating enough biological parameters so model behavior remains credible while still running in a real-time game context.
